Futaba Yoshioka (吉岡 双葉 Yoshioka Futaba) is the main female protagonist of the Ao Haru Ride series.

She is a 2nd year high school student whose first love is Kou Tanaka (who is now known as Kou Mabuchi).

Appearance

Futaba is a considerably beautiful young girl with upper back-length brown hair that has bangs swept to the right side and big golden-brown eyes. She tends to not see herself as very "girly", but she sometimes tries to wear makeup and gets irritated whenever Kou Mabuchi tells her "It doesn't suit her", which she sort of agrees with.

Due to this, she doesn't really believe Toma Kikuchi when he is trying to tell her how feminine she is. Later on, she decides to wear makeup, lose weight, and sometimes puts her hair behind her ear for a cuter look (disregarding Kou's opinion).

Futaba is usually seen wearing her school uniform consisting of a white shirt, stripped tie, a black sweater tied around her waist, and a skirt with knee-length black socks and black shoes. Outside school she usually wears casual clothing, but prefers wearing cute clothes, such as skirts, pink t-shirts and t-shirts with lots of hearts printed on them.

Personality

In high school, Futaba's character has drastically taken a turn. No longer feminine nor cute, she tries to make herself appear as unattractive as possible - walking in a not so feminine manner, eating lots of food and not caring about her physical look. The reason for this is that she had been outcasted in middle school by all of the girls due to favoritism from the boys. Determined to have friends in high school, she sacrifices her true, girly self for her classmates approval, even being best friends with girls who didn't really care about their friendship in the first place. After befriending Kou once again, along with Yuri Makita, Shuko Murao and Aya Kominato, Futaba learned to live for herself and faces the world honestly. Futaba is strong-willed, stubborn, yet passionate and caring.

Futaba can be a little indecisive when it comes to what she should do about her feelings for Kou. She gets sort of irritated easily when she can't figure out how Kou feels or thinks. Despite Futaba's kindness, she can become uneasy either when Yuri is trying to become very close with Kou, but mostly Kou and Yui Narumi's relationship.Nonetheless Futaba has a great understanding of both people and situations including herself and a need to understand both things. In short, she is great at figuring people out. Being able to correctly analyse both Youri and her classmates feelings, Understanding that if she acts or doesn't act in certain situations the result would be bad as well as quickly coming to terms with the fact that Kou is still kind and sweet just more bitter from his recent experiences. She therefore becomes frustrated when she fails to understand a person or situation.

Background

Since middle school, Futaba has always believed that boys were simply too rough and violent for her taste. With the petite Tanaka-kun as the only exception, she yearned to get to know him better and eventually shared brief, sentimental moments with him - including a plan to go to the summer festival together. Accidentally telling a boy in her school, Naito, that she hated boys within Kou's hearing proximity, she worries about his opinion of her but convinces herself that he understands that he is special. The summer festival arrives but Kou doesn't show up. Returning from the summer vacation, it is acknowledged that Kou had transferred to another school without a word. Futaba experiences the epiphany that she felt attraction for the boy and regrets how their relationship had become.

Plot

Relationships

Kou Mabuchi

Futaba's relationship with Kou starts out rather complicated. Her first year of middle school, she liked the sweet and innocent Kou. When she met Kou again in high school, she was thrown off by his new attitude and was still in love with the old him. Later she ends up accepting Kou's "new" personality and found her self falling deeply in love with him. In the heat of the moment, Futaba sometimes acts very flirtatious with Kou and says things she wouldn't normally say. Its hard for her obvious feelings to get through to Kou, since some how once the "wall" between them breaks, another one forms.

Futaba has a tendency to become a little jealous, but mostly dishearten when Kou shows affection towards Narumi. She doesn't quite understand Kou's feelings for Narumi and why he has to always be by her side. After confronting Narumi on how she feels about Kou and finding out she is in fact in love with him, this only increases Futaba's uneasiness regarding those two's relationship. Unable to continue feeling the way she was, Futaba decides to confess to Kou, but gets rejected (this incident still doesn't necessarily change how much she loves Kou). After her feelings being turned down, Futaba attempts to completely erase Kou from her life to the point that she even pushes him away when he tries to hug her, without knowing Kou's intent to tell her he loves her.[4]Eventually, she gives into her strong feelings for Kou and hopes for both of them to follow though on their promise. On the night of their planned meeting, Yoshioka becomes stricken with fear of permanently losing Kou after hearing he was admitted to a hospital after being involved in a car accident. Relieved by finding out he's alive and well with only scratches and bruises, in tears she speaks her mind of being scared of the idea of never being able to be with him. After sharing kisses and planning the date that was long overdue since middle school, they finally become a couple.

Yuri Makita

Futaba finds Yuuri very adorable. She sees her as a very important friend, which sort of prevented her from wanting to tell Yuuri (who stated she likes Kou) that she also had feelings for Kou. Sometimes she can't beat Yuuri when she is advancing her tactics to get with Kou, which makes her feel a little left behind. But, Futaba never let their issue of loving the same person get in the way of their friendship. As time passes, their bond strengthens and they tend to act more sisterly to the point where Futaba is scolded by Yuuri on a few occasions.

Shuko Murao

Shuuko is also a friend that Futaba cherishes. Since Shuuko is the "neutral party" (in the sense of she doesn't have feelings for Kou like Yuuri and Futaba), it's easy for Futaba to get advice on her problems with Kou and the uneasiness she feels very often. Unlike Aya, Futaba isn't bothered by the fact that Shuuko has feelings for Tanaka-sensei, she actually supports her due to the fact that she can understand what Shuuko is going though and also is able to learn from Shuuko and Tanaka-sensei's relationship.

Toma Kikuchi

Futaba's first interaction with Touma was rather unfortunate, where she ended up tripping and falling on top if him and accidentally touching an awkward area on his body. This lead to her shy and self-conscious behavior around him. After clearing up the misunderstanding, they are able to talk normally. She tends to be sort of oblivious of Touma's feelings for her and sees him only as a friend (mostly because when ever she's around him she tends to think about Kou). Futaba is surprised after Touma's confession to her, but doesn't know how to respond. However, now starts to show more interest in Touma and actually tries to see if she can have the type of feelings she has for Kou, for him. With knowing how nice of a guy Touma is, she starts to believe that they could have very substantial relationship.

Futaba is hesitant to take Touma's request and go on a date with him, because she fears that even after their date, she still won't be able to fall in love with him (due to the fact that her feelings for Kou hasn't changed).[5] Still, Futaba agrees to their date (accompanied by Yuuri and Touma's friend, Uchimiya). When it turns out to only be the two of them left on the date, Futaba spots Kou and Narumi and begins to cry, feeling horrible about herself due to the fact that she was thinking of Kou the whole time while on a date with Touma, she is comforted by Touma with a hug while basically saying that he knew what he got his self into from the start. As their relationship progressed, Futaba's feelings for Kou never change and although she really wanted to love Toma, she could never nor wanted to forget about Kou. This resulted in Toma and her breaking up.

Aya Kominato

Aya is a good friend of Futaba, but they don't seem to interact directly very often. The only time their seen having a full one on one conversation is when the two are left alone in Kou's room and Futaba is congratulated by Aya for finally becoming Kou's girlfriend.

Yumi

Yumi was Futaba's only friend from middle school where Futaba considers her as an "important existence" in her middle school days. But one day, Yumi stopped talking to Futaba and left Futaba all alone for the rest of middle school. But one day, during their second year of high school, Yumi meets Futaba again and finally talks properly to her. Yumi thought that Futaba liked Naito, the guy she liked, from what she heard from other girls and stated that is the reason why she stopped talking to her. Yumi apologized to Futaba and they seemed to be in good terms now.
